Overview

The Opportunity View page in BluePlanner allows users to define, manage, and model business opportunities such as pricing changes, distribution adjustments, promotional activities, and more. Each opportunity tracks a potential business change across a defined Customer and Product scope, with full P&L impact modeling capabilities.

The page is divided into the following panels:
  1. Header / Default Panel — Core identification fields
  2. Info Panel — Scope: Customer, Product, and Date definitions
  3. Business Changes Panel — Modeling of specific business changes such as pricing adjustments
  4. Impact Panel — P&L impact view across a 12-month phasing timeline

Workflow & Access Control

At the top of the page, a workflow bar displays the current status of the opportunity and allows authorized users to advance, validate, or deny the opportunity. The available workflow statuses are:

Status
Description
Planned
Initial state for a newly created opportunity. Editable by users with appropriate permissions.
Proposed
Opportunity has been submitted for review.
Approved
Opportunity has been reviewed and approved.
Closed
Opportunity has been closed — either fulfilled or expired.
Cancelled
Opportunity has been cancelled and is no longer active.

Idea
Business Rule — Access Rights: Workflow advancement is based on access rights defined by user role. The ability to edit and delete an opportunity is governed by both the current workflow status and the permissions enabled for the user's role.

Edit Mode

The Opportunity View page is read-only by default. To make any changes, edit mode must be activated.
  1. To enter edit mode, click the Pencil icon located in the top-right corner of the Opportunity View page.
  2. Once in edit mode, the pencil icon is replaced by an Undo button. Clicking the Undo button will discard all unsaved changes and exit edit mode without committing anything.
  3. To commit changes, click the Save button.

Default Panel (Header Fields)

The default panel at the top of the Opportunity View page displays core identification and classification fields. These fields are always visible and establish the fundamental nature of the opportunity.

Field
Required
Description
Type
Read-only
Indicates whether the record is a Risk or an Opportunity. The values are RISKS or OPPS. This field is set at creation and cannot be modified.
Opp Code
Read-only
A unique system-generated identifier for the opportunity. The code begins with the letter O, followed by the last digit of the fiscal year, followed by an alphanumeric sequence (e.g., O6A1B5 represents fiscal year ending in 6). Codes follow the pattern A1A1, A1A2, etc.
Category
Yes
A classification field used for reporting purposes. Options are: Assortment, Pricing, Distribution & Velocity, Terms, Promotion, Costs, and New Business. Category may also be configured with an optional second level of sub-categories (see below). Note: New Business has special business logic implications (see below).
Confidence
Yes
A forecasting indicator representing the likelihood that the opportunity will materialize. Options are: High, Medium, or Low. Used for reporting and forecast probability analysis.
Name
Yes
A user-defined label for the opportunity to make it easily identifiable and referenceable.
Description
No
An optional free-text field for providing additional context. Clicking the Description link opens an expandable text entry area.

Info
Optional Sub-Categories: Category can optionally be configured with sub-categories, which effectively creates two levels of Category. The first (top) level is the standard category; it cannot be modified and may optionally drive business logic — most notably in combination with New Business. The second, lower level can be set to any custom value. When sub-categorization is in use, mappings to the default categories can be excluded, in which case that entire category will not display as selectable. Sub-categories can be used on the List and Report pages for filtering and reporting on aggregated data.

NotesNote: When Category is set to New Business, additional business logic is triggered within the Opportunity View page. This behavior is described separately in the New Business category documentation.

Info Panel

The Info panel defines the scope of the opportunity by specifying which Customer and Product(s) it applies to, along with three key Dates that govern its lifecycle.

Customer & Product Fields

Field
Required
Description
Customer
Yes
Single-select field. Can be a Customer at the planning level (C1) or a Customer entity (CX). The selected Customer must belong to the Customer's primary hierarchy.
Products
Yes
Multi-select field. Can include Products at the planning level (P1) or Product entities (PX). All selected Products must belong to the Product's primary hierarchy. Multiple Products can be added to a single opportunity.

Date Fields

Field
Required
Description
Internal Decision Date
Yes
The date by which an internal decision about whether the opportunity will materialize should be made.
Customer Decision Date
Yes
The date by which the opportunity should be confirmed with the Customer.
Activation Date
Yes
The date from which the opportunity is considered valid and active. This date also determines the start of the 12-month impact phasing in the Impact panel.

Idea
Business Rule — Date Order Enforcement: The three date fields enforce the following ordering constraint: Internal Decision Date ≤ Customer Decision Date ≤ Activation Date. The date pickers enforce this logic and will prevent invalid selections.

Notes
Note: If the Customer, Products, or Activation Date are changed after impact data has already been captured, saving will be blocked. A warning will appear in the top-left of the Impact panel indicating that impact must be re-calculated before saving, since the scope of the data has changed.

Business Changes Panel

The Business Changes panel is used to model a specific type of business change associated with the opportunity. This panel is optional — it does not need to be populated in order to save an opportunity.

Business Change Fields

Field
Required
Description
Change
Yes*
The type of business change being modeled. Options are: Distribution, Pricing, Spend, and Costs. Note: Currently only Pricing should be used; the other types are planned to be removed in a future release.
From Date
Yes
The start date for the business change.
To Date
No
The end date for the business change. If left blank (No Expiry), the change is treated as open-ended.
Value Type
Read-only
Always pre-filled to Percentage. This field does not need to be modified.
Value
Yes*
The percentage value of the change. When Change = Pricing, this represents the modeled change to base prices (e.g., -20.00% indicates a 20% reduction in base price).
Comment
No
An optional free-text comment for additional context about the business change.

Predict Feature (Pricing Only)

When Change = Pricing is selected, the Predict button becomes available. This feature uses price elasticity modeling to generate volume predictions based on the configured pricing change.

Three model types are available, each more advanced than the previous:
  1. Basic — The standard prediction model that doesn't use any AI, available for all scope configurations.
  2. Regression — A more advanced model that uses AI and Base Retail prices. This model requires the opportunity to be scoped at the Customer planning level (C1) AND the Product planning level (P1). It cannot be used if a Customer entity (CX) or a Product entity (PX) is selected in the Info panel.
  3. Hierarchical — The most advanced and accurate model that uses our most sophisticated AI methods, available for all scope configurations.

When Change = Pricing is selected, a Model Type dropdown appears. This dropdown only displays if an advanced model (Regression or Hierarchical) is available based on the current scope and the models are configured for your environment.

Idea
Business Rule — Data Prerequisite for Advanced Models: Using the Predict feature with either advanced model (Regression or Hierarchical) requires structured POS data supplied by a syndicated data provider (e.g., NielsenIQ, Circana, SPINS) that is systematically loaded into UpClear’s advanced modeling ecosystem. Enabling this requires setup and coordination with your UpClear point of contact to determine: the exact structure of the provider’s data files as they correspond to your environment, the anticipated timing of the data being provided, and sufficient data quality — the latter assessed and confirmed by UpClear’s dedicated Delivery team.

IdeaBusiness Rule — Regression Model Scope Restriction: The Regression model cannot be used if a Customer entity (CX) or Product entity (PX) is selected in the Info panel, as this model requires Base Retail prices which are only available when both the Customer and Product are at the planning level (C1 and P1).

Idea
Business Rule — Hierarchical Model Data Threshold: When using the Hierarchical model, approximately at least 200 observations are needed per individual Product (P1) for the results to be statistically significant.

Impact Panel

The Impact panel displays and captures the expected P&L impact of the opportunity across a 12-month time horizon. Impact data is presented as a grid with metrics along the vertical axis and months along the horizontal axis.

P&L Metrics (Rows)

Five metrics are always displayed, representing the standard P&L structure from top to bottom:

Metric
Editable
Description
VOLUME %
Yes
The percentage-based representation of the Volume metric. Displays the proportional volume change.
VOLUME
Yes
Sell-In Volume (UOM0). Represents incremental volume associated with the opportunity.
GROSS REVENUE
No (Calculated)
Sell-In Gross Revenue = Volume × Base Price. When a Pricing change is defined in the Business Changes panel, the Base Price used here reflects the modeled percentage change (e.g., a -20% change applies 80% of Base Price), so the pricing change is incorporated directly into the Gross Revenue calculation. Automatically calculated; cannot be edited directly.
SPEND
Yes
Trade Spend associated with the opportunity. Phased independently of volume proportions.
NET REVENUE
No (Calculated)
Net Revenue = Gross Revenue − Spend. Automatically calculated based on the above two metrics.

Time Phasing (Columns)

Each column in the Impact panel represents a calendar month. The opportunity spans 12 months total.
  1. The first column's start date matches the Activation Date and ends at the last day of that same month.
  2. All subsequent columns represent a full calendar month, from the first to the last day of that month.

Calculate Predictive Impact

The Calculate Predictive Impact button uses pricing change data from the Business Changes panel to populate the VOLUME % and VOLUME rows across the 12-month phasing grid.
  1. When pressed, the system retrieves the proportional volume projections for each Customer, Product, and Time period from the volume planning data in BluePlanner.
  2. These proportions are converted to absolute amounts and applied to the VOLUME and VOLUME % cells.
  3. GROSS REVENUE is also calculated at this time based on the populated volume and base prices, with any Pricing change percentage defined in the Business Changes panel applied to those prices.

Manual Volume Re-Phasing

Users may manually adjust VOLUME % or VOLUME values at the cell level to re-phase volume differently than what was generated by the predictive calculation, or simply to enter data manually at the VOLUME cell level independent of prediction or any data in VOLUME %.
  1. After manually editing VOLUME cells, click the Apply Volume Phasing button to cascade the GROSS REVENUE and all downstream P&L metrics to reflect the revised phasing.
  2. The system applies the same underlying volume proportions from the projected volume data for all cells within the matching Customer, Product, and Time scope.

Idea
Business Rule — Spend Phasing: Spend phasing is independent of the volume proportions. Spend must be re-phased manually and is not affected by the Apply Volume Phasing action.

Multiple Products

When multiple Products are added to an opportunity in the Info panel, each metric row in the Impact panel can be expanded to display data broken down at the individual Product level. This breakdown is displayed as a hierarchical tree.

Cell-Level Comments

Users can optionally add comments to individual cells in the Impact panel to explain why specific values were entered.
  1. To view comments, click the Comment icon at the top-right of the Impact panel. The comment panel will display who made the last comment or data change, and when it occurred.
  2. Cells that contain comments are marked with a small purple triangle in the top-right corner of the cell.
  3. When a cell's data or comment has been changed but not yet saved, the cell displays an orange border and/or orange triangle to indicate there are unsaved changes.

Scope Change Warning

Idea
Business Rule — Scope Change Realignment: If the Customer, Products, or Activation Date fields are modified after impact data has already been entered, saving will be blocked. A warning message will appear at the top-left of the Impact panel indicating that the impact data must be re-calculated, as the underlying scope (Customer, Product, and/or Time) has changed and the existing data no longer reflects valid projected volume proportions.
